North Dakota: Morning on Harmon Lake

Woman in a canoe on a lake with trees coming out of the water

About 23 miles Northwest of Bismarck is Harmon Lake, a 145-acre reservoir set on Otter Creek in North Dakota’s Great Plains. Since a lack of precipitation made the Little Missouri River too low to paddle, this artificial lake set among rolling grassy knolls and cycling paths was a good alternative excursion. It’s 1800 miles from Hartford to Bismarck across the US heartland. Hundreds of miles of corn and soy cash crops, peppered with industrial cattle farms line the highway as…

Kentucky: Mud and Kentucky River Palisades

Limestone cliffs of Kentucky River Palisades line dark green river. Trees and cloudy sky in the background

After our adventures in the alpine lakes of Wyoming and Colorado, we headed back East. Stops along the way home included Denver and Topeka for some sightseeing, no paddling. We added Kentucky as a canoe stop before the final stretch of driving home. We also wanted to add a river to our summer trip. This would be the Kentucky River. The Kentucky River Palisades consist of about 100-miles of blueway. The limestone cliffs are a part of a 450-million year…

Colorado: Peace and Car Trouble at Monarch Lake

Lake with a reflection of the trees and tree covered mountains in the background

On our way back East from Grand Teton and Yellowstone, we stopped in Colorado to continue enjoying the Rocky Mountains. In order to grab a shower after a week of camping we settled in Grand Lake, Colorado. This small tourist town is located near the Western entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. Similar to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Rocky Mountain National Park limits activities you can do with pets. By staying outside of the park, we were able…

Wyoming: Jackson Lake and the Teton Range

Woman on a pebble rock shoreline looking across a lake at tall mountains

After a year and a half of staying home, we knew our 2021 Canoe52 trip needed to be epic. We love Connecticut, but we wanted to venture far away into an environment that was much different than what we were experiencing day in and day out. With two weeks blocked off on the calendar, we determined we could squeeze in three states: Wyoming, Colorado and Kentucky. Our adventures in Wyoming began with a 3 day roadtrip to reach Grand Teton…

Connecticut: Paddling the Long Tidal River (1 of 4)

Since we live in Connecticut, we determined that the paddling story had to be epic. With this in mind, we opted for a multi-day adventure stretching the length of the Connecticut River from Enfield to Old Saybrook. That is over 60 miles in 4 days. The origin of the word, “Connecticut,” means, “long tidal river.” It’s an Algonquin term. Over a series of posts dedicated to our adventure through Connecticut, we will illustrate the beauty and importance of the river,…

Maryland: Paddle on the bay of Assateague Island

Assateague15

It’s the last day of spring break and we’re dreading the end of a fabulous road trip. We’ve spent the last 7 days outside with our pup in absolutely perfect weather. Now it’s time to pack up and head back to reality. Not before one last paddle. On our last morning of spring break we packed up camp and drove to the Ferry Landing Boat Launch for a paddle on the bay of Assateague Island in Maryland. Where to paddle…

South Carolina: Paddling Cedar Creek in Congaree National Park

Cedar creek 1

It’s mid-April, we’ve broken free from work for a full week and the only two things on our minds are canoeing and camping. After work on Friday night we loaded up the VW and headed towards Congaree National Park, just outside Columbia, South Carolina. After an overnight drive we arrived at the park for three nights of camping and what we hoped would be some great paddling. Serious storms hit South Carolina the week before we visited so there was…

The first time I: Took a Multi-Day Paddle

Canoe Enfield, CT

As we are gearing up for our 2017 Canoe 52 adventures, I wanted to recount my first multi-day paddle. My brother-in-law, Chris, and I set off on a four-day paddle down the Connecticut Riveron August 2, 2015.  We had absolutely no idea what we were doing.  First, we got a late start.  We opted for Bloody Mary and a hardy breakfast, essential for a full-day paddle, but we did not hit the water until after 11.  We embarked on our journey at…

Check out what lies ahead for Canoe 52 in 2017

We are gearing up for a great year of Canoe 52 adventures. The cold New England weather has left us off the water for most of the season which leaves us no choice but to dream about the rivers and lakes we’d like to paddle this year.  A mid-March snowstorm that drops snow measuring in the double digits is definitely motivation to plan for an escape. I’ve probably mentioned this before, but to get a sense of how our vacation planning works…

The first time I: Went Connecticut River paddling in the middle of February

CT River Winter Paddle 1

Sometimes you have to crack through the ice in order to paddle. That’s exactly what we did for our first paddle of 2017, also our first paddle that involved ice! My brother Chris was our special guest for some Connecticut River paddling this February. I have canoed in the cold, but this was definitely the first time I canoed when ice was covering the edge of the river! Getting to the River Our initial plan was to paddle the Farmington River.…
